Public submission period for Buckland Park housing development Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) closes today

Greens MLC Mark Parnell has called on the State Government to reject the Walker Corporation Buckland Park housing development in a response to the controversial project's EIS.
"It's hard to imagine a worse housing development for Adelaide," said Greens MLC and planning lawyer Mark Parnell.
"The proposed Buckland Park housing estate is miles away from major services and employment, on a flood plain, next to a garden waste composting facility, without any direct public transport.
"As soon as petrol prices rise it will leave thousands of South Australians stranded and vulnerable. This is a recipe for a future ghetto," he said.
Mark Parnell has also questioned why the Rann Government is paying planning consultants Connor Holmes to advise them on whether Buckland Park is a suitable area for new housing as part of the 30 year Plan for Greater Adelaide, at the same time as the firm has been paid by the developers, Walker Corporation, to write the Buckland Park EIS.
"How can the Rann Government use Connor Holmes to evaluate whether a housing development would be a good idea for the Buckland Park site, when the very same consultants are being paid by developers to spruik the project?
"This is an outrageous conflict of interest. How can the people of South Australia have confidence in planning advice when the people who are making the advice are actively and openly working on behalf of the developers?
"The Government has no choice but to reject this short sighted project," he said.
